Hey guys, it has been really long since I wrote here..almost 2 months. I was busy making custom face balms for you guys and I was enjoying each and every bit of it. I have finally shipped out all the orders for the balm today morning and here I am now writing this blog post. I had this topic in my mind since the day I switched to natural toothpaste but work kept me busy.

Let’s get started!

Our oral health depends on both our outside and inside care. Today, I am going to talk about the care from the outside which involves brushing, tongue scraping, rinsing and oil pulling.

Brushing your teeth twice a day is a must! Make sure you use a natural toothpaste. You can read this article to know the harms of the ingredients found in our commercial toothpaste like colgate, pepsodent, etc. I made a switch to 100% natural tooth powder this May and I am never going back to commercial white toothpaste.

I have been using the Chamkeela Tooth Powder from Raw Beauty made with organic, ethically sourced ingredients like Himalayan Rock Salt, Activated Charcoal, Turmeric, Clove and Cinnamon. I make a paste using half tablespoon coconut oil from Blend It Raw Apothecary and half tablespoon tooth powder and gently massage it on my gums and teeth. This mixture has helped me deal with tartar, weak gums and mouth odor. I have not felt the need to go back to commercial pastes.

Since I love making my own products, I also tried a DIY version of tooth powder. Here is the recipe for a minty chocolate toothpaste.

  • 1 tablespoon Sea Salt (kills bacteria and germs and combats bad breath)
  • 1/2 tablespoon Cacao Powder (adds flavor)
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground Mint Powder (adds flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Stevia powder (for sweet taste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon Baking Soda (balances the pH of the mouth)

Making a switch to a toothpowder from toothpaste can be a little hard but once you get used to it, there is no going back. Tooth powders obviously don’t taste or smell as good as your commercial toothpaste but they are way healthier for your teeth, gums, health and environment.

Also, I have been using a bamboo toothbrush from Bamboo India for past two weeks because small differences from our end can make a huge difference.

Oil Pulling

An ayurvedic technique which involves swishing oil for 10-15 minutes (not more than that). The oil pulls the bad bugs from under your gums and in between your teeth as though they are being drawn to a powerful magnet. Do not gargle or swallow. Once you are done oil pulling, always rinse your mouth with warm water to remove any oil/bacteria left behind.

I only use organic extra virgin coconut oil for this. Oil pulling can also be done using sesame oil, sunflower oil or a combination of all these three oils. A mixture of coconut oil and baking soda can also be used.

Personally, I am very impatient to follow this one regularly. I do this very rarely but I hope I incorporate this habit of mine in my routine well.

Rinsing

I have been doing this since my childhood. Just mix in one tablespoon of sea salt in warm water. Gargle and swish. It can be used as an alternative to oil pulling.

Please please stay away from commercial mouthwashes since they can be very drying and irritating for the gums. Try this easy, cheap alternative.

Tongue Scraping

Tongue scraping helps to remove the debris, bacteria, and dead cells that build up on the tongue with time. You can read the proper way and benefits of tongue scraping here.

I use a copper tongue scraper every morning followed by brushing my teeth and gums. Copper has been used for centuries as a bacteria-resistant metal. The mouth is loaded with both good and not-so-good bacteria. Copper not only seems to be toxic to the bad bacteria, but it also provides important enzymes that are needed for healthy microbes in the mouth to survive.

That’s all I do for my oral health apart from eating balanced meals.
