Usually, when people think of Kerala, the places that come to mind are the hills in Munnar, the backwaters in Allepey or the famous Kovalam Beach. Varkala is not yet a popular tourist destination among Indian tourists but full of people from abroad. But, I FELL IN LOVE WITH VARKALA! A small laid back hippie town located just an hour away from Trivandrum, this place took a permanent spot in my heart as an ideal place to have a relaxing vacation in India. I love Goa, there’s no doubt about that. But this little town also blew my mind. Streets lined with cafes serving vegan & organic food, people roaming in swimsuits chilled and no one cares, where good and laid back vibes are accompanied by the beautiful views of red sandstone cliffs looking upto beaches with turquoise waters – this is what Varkala is. Market, yoga studios, vegan restaurants, spas, crystal shops..you will find everything here.

Varkala is a wonderful place to relax and rejuvenate

THINGS TO DO IN VARKALA

  • Hire a scooty and drive to anywhere and everywhere because the views you will get on your way are stunning.
  • Sit in one of the beach shacks on the Varkala cliff and watch sunset. Varkala is known for its dramatic sunsets.
  • Spend a day sunbathing and swimming at Varkala Beach.
  • Drive to Kappil beach and kayak in the serene backwaters. The backwaters meet the sea here. There is a scenic stretch of road between the lake, the Arabian Sea and the backwaters and this view is breathtaking.
  • Attend meditation/art/ yoga workshops.
  • Treat yourself to a body massage. Since you are in Kerala, Abhyanga is the best option.
  • Shop. I am not a shopaholic but I couldn’t resist myself from buying some pretty beach clothes from here. I would recommend you to just pack your swimsuits and buy the rest of the clothes from the markets near Varkala Beach. You will love all the hippie clothes – coverups, dresses, skirts, tailor-made clothes. They quote a really high price so make sure you bargain a little.
  • Boating at Ponnumthuruthu island. It is quite difficult to find this place because we took a small boat from a place which is not yet commercialized, hence not available on the google maps. You can drop me an email and I can provide you the contact of the person who can take you on a boating tour there.
  • Visit beaches like Odayam beach & Edava beach to spend a peaceful evening away from the crowd. If you are lucky enough, you might spot some dolphins.

Places To Eat At In Varkala

You will find majority of cafes on the Varkala cliff, hence we used to go there every afternoon for lunch and evenings for snack/smoothie bowl/coffee.

Coffee temple – this chilled out place offers great hot and cold coffees, tea, smoothies, breakfasts and salad. I loved their Chia Pudding in coconut milk.

Darjeeling Cafe– Bohemian decor, stunning sunset view and delicious western food. Their smoothie bowl is a must try.

Cafe Italiano– Cozy upstairs seating overlooking the beach and a wall lined with books. Do try their pizza with homemade base.

Little Tibet– Head to this cafe for some warm spicy food. Their thukpa is delicious.

Cafe Del Mar– I just went here twice for their Bannofie pie. It was the best.

Where We Stayed At In Varkala – B’Canti Boutique Beach Resort

Varkala is full of budget hotels but we wanted to have a relaxing vacation with massages and yoga, hence we chose to stay at a boutique resort near Edava Beach- B’Canti which has its own yoga and wellness ashram. I instantly chose to stay at this place because of its gorgeous location with a seasonal beach just in front. I used to wake up a little early to sit in our quaint little balcony offering the views of Arabian Sea.

B’Canti is located centrally, so you can either choose to walk to Varkala or Kappil Beach or hire a scooty by informing at their reception.

We used to start our day with an early morning yoga session on the beach cliff, indulge in South Indian breakfast at The Bait & Hook Restaurant at this property followed by a dip in the ocean. Our days ended with a stroll on the beach in front of the resort and an ayurvedic treatment. I went in for Shiro Abhyanga- head, neck and shoulders massage every single day at their wellness ashram because I had severe neck and shoulders pain before this trip and I came back with no signs of pain.

We had the best meals at B’Canti. Do try their dosa, dal, biryani, tossed salad and the grilled paneer and cauliflower.

Things I loved about this property:-

  • The wellness ashram & the person who handles this ashram. He is a naturopath, yoga teacher, crystal healer and astrologer, so you might gain a lot of knowledge while you are here.
  • The location.
  • The pool- it has a jacuzzi in it (you can imagine my excitement. I am a water baby)

If you plan a visit to Varkala, please minimize your plastic waste, don’t litter, carry your own water bottle and pick up wrappers/straws/bottles if you find any in the ocean/on the beach and throw them in the dustbin.

Lots of love!
