diy using essential oils

Winters are kicking in and all I want to do is curl up and drink some Chamomile Rosehip Tea while reading a Haruki Murakami book. But not everything about winter is fun, your skin and lips cry out for hydration and love – fortunately for me, most of my skin issues are addressed at work. Personally I am someone who has really sensitive skin due to which most commercial goodies and cosmetics are a complete no no. Here are a few recipes that are used by the Meraki Family to keep our skin happy and glowing!

Body Scrub (Rosemary & Lavender)

In the winters exfoliating is very important and this body scrub handles it perfectly along with keeping our skin hydrated and healthy. To make this amazing natural scrub we used the following –

Mix together 1 cup baking soda, 1 cup Epsom Salt, Fresh Rosemary chopped, 3/4th cup Sweet Almond Oil , Vitamin E Oil (or use the oil inside 2 Vitamin E Capsules), 10 Drops of Rosemary Essential Oil and 10 Drops of Lavender Essential Oil.

We made another delicious variety of Lavender Essential Oil and Peppermint Essential Oil, you can play with the ingredients as per your liking.

Lip Balm (Chocolate & Mint)

Dry winters can be very harsh on our lips, this simple recipe can you help you make this fantastic Lip Balm in the comfort of your home. For this Balm we used 2 Tea Spoons of Coconut Oil, Vitamin E Oil, 1 Tea Spoon Beeswax , 1 Tea Spoon of Raw Honey (for the yummy taste) and 1 Tea Spoon of Cocoa Powder. Overall heat this mixture for 5 mins till the beeswax melts, take the mixture off heat and place the bowl in a container with cold water to bring down the temperature. We added 3 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil , for the amazing cooling sensation it gives.

We also made another variation with only  Raw Honey & Lavender Essential Oil , It smells amazing !

Body Butter (Geranium, Palmrosa & Juniper Berry)

Moisturizing is something a lot of us struggle with, the products are either loaded with chemicals or dry out too quickly. This homemade body butter is your answer, although for a few of you that don’t enjoy coconut oil I urge you to experiment with other carrier oils. In the beginning as soon as you apply it, it might seem greasy but it gets absorbed fast enough.

For this Body Butter we added ½ cup of Sweet Almond Oil , ½ Cup of Coconut Oil, ¼ Cup Beeswax Pellets and rose petals, heat the mixture till the wax melts. Once it does , take the mixture off heat and place the bowl in a container with cold water to bring down the temperature. We added 5 Drops of Palmrosa Essential Oil (for Hydrating),5 Drops of Juniper Berry (for good blood circulation) and 5 Drops Geranium Essential Oil (to improve skin health). Whisk the mixture for 5 minutes till it becomes nice and thick. Voila! Your Body butter is ready!

For our face we all use only oils mixed with essential oils addressing different skin issues. For me personally due to sensitive skin I only use Clear Jojoba Oil as a carrier and depending on my skin on that particular day I dilute a particular Essential Oil. For Eg. Palmarosa helps hydrate your skin and Tea Tree for Acne. Your choice of Carrier Oil and Essential Oils for your face I believe should be a very personal decision.  Oils in general work much faster, as our skin naturally produces oil and accepts our application as an extension of itself. If you have a skincare that works well for you, sure stick to it. If not, It’s most definitely worth a shot.  Its nature’s gift to us that has been readily available to us for eons, they are multipurpose and most definitely better than harmful chemicals. Happy Winters Folks!
